Story Design Week 23

My final week at Story :(((((

Lauren the new intern arrived on the Monday from Ireland. It was really nice to meet another student doing a placement and we got on great from the start. I spent the day teaching her the ropes of the more administrative side of things like the uploading and putting samples onto garments on photoshop. I also recorded a few videos that she would be able to go back to and refer to if she needed any help with these things in the future.

Together in the afternoon we worked on a design that used some of the scraps of vintage prints that we had. We plaited the prints together to create a very wild and whacky textural line that we the worked on a neckline placement for. It was really good to work with someone so closely on a design and to bounce ideas across from each other. Overall I think we came up with something we were very happy with. It must have also been so nice for her to jump straight into designing and seeing the possibilities that this internship has for us students.

The next day Lauren worked from home and me and Julinka worked together closely to get some more designs done for me before I left. We worked on some to-scale pieces that we drew straight onto paper and wrote up. We were still focusing on the sustainability factor and creating fabric flowers rather than using plastic in anyway.

I was starting to feel very bittersweet at this point. I’d loved my time here so much. I feel very very lucky that I had had such a positive experience as I know that this can often not be the case for most interns. I’d grown so attached to the company and to Julinka. I was very emotional about the idea of moving on.

Julinka offered to me to work on a design myself before I left that she would be able to send off to the artilliers and then gift to me as a leaving present. This was amazing for me and one of the best leaving gifts I could ask for. I think as someone aspiring to be a designer, to be able to actually wear something you have drawn and designed is the ultimate. I decided to go with another collar as I had loved working on them before and thought they cam out amazing when they came back from India.

On my last day I got to work on designing my collar. I used the same format as the lily collar with the same cutwork in the background, however, I drew out a new flower for the focal point. I was so so excited to see this come back and to actually be able to wear it. It would be an amazing keep sake from my time at Story Designs.

I had quite an emotional goodbye from the studio at the end of my last day. How overwhelmed I felt with emotion when I closed the doors behind me for the last time really consolidated to me how thankful I was for my time there. I’m so grateful to Julinka for all she taught me, all the trust she put into me and for showing me that this dream is achievable.
