Something very exciting that came from the Oasis meeting this week was the fact that one of the designs that they bought had a stock print on it. This is where Story used a print that belonged to the artelier that they use in India and it had already been purchased previously. This meant Julinka needed a new ditsy floral print designing that Oasis could use in the sample that they bought as to not to have any copyright issues with the print that had already sold.
Julinka decided to leave this task up to me! This was the first design task that had been sent my way so far! This was a little bit daunting for me even though it was a simple enough brief in itself. I think the weight of knowing it had already been bought by such a large company made me panic a little bit about the whole thing. I wasn’t too sure how different I had to go with the print as I knew she wanted it to be similar so it didn’t change the design too much, but I wasn’t too sure how similar it could be as I knew there could be a copyright issue.
It took me a few attempts, but eventually I tried to just see it for what it was…I needed to paint a few nice looking flowers. I got my watercolours out and started painting, I did quite a few different variations that I could take back to Julinka and together we picked the best ones which I then uploaded to photoshop and created a ditsy print from. I didn’t need to put it into repeat at this point as Oasis would do that when they received the CAD file.
By the end of it I was really quite happy with what I’d done. It was nice for me to go back to painting something beautiful and aesthetic, this was something I hadn’t done in quite a long time with my foundation and uni courses. I also think this might have been one of the reasons why it took me so long to get into the swing of it. I was definitely overthinking it. But this was a big learning curve for me to be ok with taking the pressure off my designs in the future. I was grateful for all of Julinka’s guidance and advice with all of this, I think she too could see I was putting a bit too much thought into something I knew deep down I could do very naturally.
